How X's Algorithm Influences Political Leanings
A recent study published in Nature uncovers how X's algorithm, which determines post order in user feeds, shifts political opinions towards conservatism. Conducted by Bocconi University's Germain Gauthier, it highlights the lasting impact of algorithmic feeds, revealing a systemic bias and calling for more transparency.

A groundbreaking study published in Nature has revealed that X's algorithm, a system responsible for deciding the order of posts in users' feeds, affects political views by nudging users towards a more conservative stance. Headed by Germain Gauthier from Bocconi University, this research is among the few real-world randomized experimental studies examining the influence of social media platforms on political beliefs.
The experiment involved 4,965 active users from the US, who were divided into groups using either X's algorithm-driven 'For You' feed or a chronological feed. The findings showed those using the default algorithm feed were significantly more inclined towards conservative policy issues and demonstrated a shift in attitudes towards global issues like the war in Ukraine.
In light of these findings, calls for transparency in algorithmic processes are more pressing than ever. The study aligns with prior research depicting similar biases, amplifying the need for governmental regulations to ensure these influential systems are openly monitored, fostering accountability within the realm of social media.
