Britain Probes Microsoft's Software Market Influence
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority is investigating Microsoft's dominance in the business software market. The inquiry focuses on product bundling, AI integration, and cloud licensing practices. It seeks to ensure competition, innovation, and competitive pricing in the British economy's software sector.
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Microsoft's influence in the business software domain, marking its fourth strategic market status investigation under recently granted powers. The probe will scrutinize the bundling of Microsoft products like Windows, Word, Excel, Teams, and Copilot for potential anti-competitive practices.
A Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company is prepared to cooperate with the CMA to facilitate the review. The investigation will not only focus on the business software market but also on Microsoft's cloud market practices. The CMA emphasizes the crucial role of business software in the British economy, where a vast number of customers depend on Microsoft's systems.
Sarah Cardell, CMA's Chief Executive, stressed the need to understand market developments and Microsoft's positioning to possibly implement targeted actions that ensure choice, innovation, and competitive pricing for UK organizations. The investigation, which runs in parallel to ongoing global antitrust investigations, concludes in February.
