Impact of Currency and AI on Wix's Workforce
Israel's Wix.com is laying off 20% of its workforce, driven by a strong shekel and rapid AI evolution. The appreciated shekel increases operational costs, while AI reduces the need for traditional workforce layers. The layoffs affect around 1,000 employees, amid near 50% slide in Nasdaq shares.
Wix.com, a leading Israeli tech company enabling small businesses to create websites, is reducing its workforce by 20%, as revealed by CEO Avishai Abrahami. The decision is influenced by the surging value of the shekel against the dollar and the swift developments in artificial intelligence.
The shekel's appreciation, marking a 33-year peak against the dollar, has exerted significant economic pressure on Wix, as most expenses are shekel-denominated while revenues remain largely in dollars. This financial mismatch poses challenges in maintaining current operational scales.
Additionally, AI's progression demands fewer workforce layers, contributing to the downsizing. The company, which had over 5,277 employees at the last count, plans to trim around 1,000 positions. The layoffs have sparked criticism from Israel's Manufacturers' Association, urging government intervention to handle the shekel's impact more effectively.
