U.S. Detains Suspected Russian Hacker Linked to Major Cyber Espionage Campaign

Denis Obrezko, a Russian national suspected of hacking, is now in U.S. custody after his extradition from Thailand. The 36-year-old appeared in Boston federal court, facing charges related to a cyber espionage campaign by the Russia-aligned group Void Blizzard, targeting U.S. companies.

Department of Justice prosecutors, with no current comments, are handling the case. Thailand extradited Obrezko in accordance with domestic laws and international treaties. Void Blizzard, reported by Microsoft, has been active since April 2024, hacking multiple sectors, including government and defense organizations in NATO and Ukraine.

The FBI tied Obrezko to cryptocurrency-enabled cyberattacks on U.S. firms via virtual private servers and domain names. With at least 11 confirmed U.S. corporate victims, the case highlights the broader cyber threat landscape.
