SPL Sørensen, the famous Danish chemist, was born on January 9, 1868 in Havrebjerg in Denmark. He was the one who founded the pH scale system, the universal scale system for measuring the acidity and alkalinity.

Søren Peder Lauritz or SPL founded the pH in a bid to move away from colour change tests which were earlier used to indicate the degree of acidity and alkalinity. The pH, on the other hand, can easily express the hydrogen ion concentration.

He worked at the Carlsberg Laboratory where he introduced the pH to the world in 1909, he worked there for over 38 years from 1901 to 1938.

The pH scale goes from 0-14, if the tested substance is acidic, the pH scale is less than 7 and it is more than 7 if the substance is alkaline. Water, which is neither acidic nor alkaline shows a pH value of 7.

Google is celebrating the great Danish biochemist with a doodle that involves a fun animated game which shows you a food item or other substances and you have to arrange it according to it pH values. But if you are wrong, Sørensen will shake his head in anger, asking you to try again.
