IRF Urges GST Reduction to Boost Helmet Safety

The International Road Federation (IRF) supports the government's campaign to tackle substandard helmets and advocates reducing GST on helmets from 18% to 0%. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has reached out to officials to enforce compliance among manufacturers and retailers, aiming to improve road safety and protect consumers.

The International Road Federation (IRF) has endorsed the government's initiative to combat the circulation of substandard helmets, while also urging the reduction of GST on helmets from 18% to 0% to enhance affordability and compliance.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has corresponded with district collectors and magistrates, instructing them to launch a nationwide campaign against manufacturers and retailers distributing non-compliant helmets to two-wheeler riders.

K K Kapila, President Emeritus of IRF, highlighted the pervasive issue of low helmet usage in India, exacerbated by many riders opting for cheaper, inferior options due to their economic constraints. This aligns with the Central Motor Vehicle Act, which mandates helmet use.
