Malaysia has cautioned its citizens against traveling to southern Thailand following a recent spate of bombings and shootings that resulted in five fatalities and thirteen injuries. The violence, attributed to suspected insurgents, transpired over the weekend in predominantly ethnic Malay Muslim provinces, which have been grappling with a separatist rebellion since 2004.
Significantly affected was the Sungai Kolok border town in Narathiwat province, where gunmen opened fire on a district office and detonated a car bomb, claiming the lives of two Thai security volunteers. In Pattani province, a separate roadside bomb resulted in three more deaths, including that of a volunteer ranger and two government officials.
Travel advisories have been issued by the Malaysian foreign ministry urging citizens to defer non-essential travel. Malaysia accounts for approximately 4.9 million of Thailand's international visitors, making the security situation a poignant concern for bilateral tourism.
