The cost of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis in India saw a 5% decline in February, prompted by reduced prices of key ingredients, according to Crisil's latest report. The agency attributed the decrease to lower costs of vegetables like onions, potatoes, and tomatoes, alongside a drop in broiler prices.
Crisil Market Intelligence noted in its 'Roti Rice Rate' report that fresh arrivals led to a decrease in prices of onions by 7%, potatoes by 17%, and tomatoes by 25%. The broiler prices also witnessed a 5% dip, primarily due to reduced demand amid bird flu concerns in Southern India, said Director-Research, Pushan Sharma.
On a yearly basis, the report highlighted a 1% decrease in the cost of preparing a vegetarian thali, thanks particularly to falling prices of tomatoes and LPG cylinders. Conversely, non-vegetarian thali expenses rose by 6%, driven by a 15% increase in broiler prices as well as elevated feed costs due to a rise in maize prices.
