Navigating Trade Waters: India's Cautionary Stance on US Deal
India approaches negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement with the US cautiously due to the lack of Fast Track Trade Authority in America. This absence allows for potential Congressional changes and post-signature certification demands that could challenge India's sovereignty, requiring diplomatic skill and vigilance.

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has urged India to proceed with caution as it negotiates a bilateral trade agreement with the United States. Without the Fast Track Trade Authority in effect, any agreement is susceptible to alterations by Congress, posing significant challenges for India.
According to GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava, the lapse of the Fast Track Authority, a mechanism that previously ensured swift approval of trade agreements without amendments, leaves Indian negotiators vulnerable. The risk of mandatory additional commitments through post-agreement certifications is a pressing concern.
India must adopt a watchful approach, advised Srivastava, especially with U.S. mechanisms capable of demanding further legal adjustments post-FTA finalization. Upcoming discussions between Indian and American officials underscore the need for foresight and strategic planning in these negotiations.
