Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has called on the Indian government to address the looming tariff threat from US President Donald Trump. During a parliamentary session, Chidambaram criticized the lack of discussion and consultation with opposition parties on the serious economic implications of a potential trade war.
Addressing The Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2025, and The Finance Bill, 2025, Chidambaram highlighted potential repercussions like depressed exports and increased inflation. He urged India to join global powers in preventing a destructive trade war. His comments followed reductions in customs duties announced in the Union Budget, which he attributed to pressure from Trump.
Commenting on the situation, TMC's Sagarika Ghose warned of a "tsunami" set to hit on April 2 with anticipated reciprocal tariffs. Meanwhile, BJP's Kunwar Ratanjeet Pratap Narayan Singh defended the government, insisting any official response must await tariff implementation. Nonetheless, concerns about India's trade relations with the US continue to stir political debate.
