The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has revealed that Jammu and Kashmir holds nearly one billion tonnes of limestone reserves. A senior central government official has indicated significant potential for other key minerals in the region, which the J&K government plans to explore for regional development.
The Union Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with J&K officials, initiated an e-auction for seven limestone mineral blocks across Anantnag, Rajouri, and Poonch districts. This marks J&K's entry into India's mineral block auction framework, potentially paving the way for local cement production and industrial growth.
To ensure sustainable exploration and transparency, J&K has introduced an Integrated Mining Surveillance System and plans further advancements in mining technology. The initiative is expected to spur revenue, boost local entrepreneurship, and provide substantial employment opportunities.
