India's major fertiliser firms, RCF, IPL, and NFL, have signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia's Uralchem to construct a greenfield urea plant. The venture, valued at USD 1.2 billion, aims to produce 2 million tonnes of urea annually, boosting India's fertiliser security.
The External Affairs Ministry highlighted the agreement as a significant step toward ensuring a steady supply of fertilisers to India. The initiative involves shared ownership among the Indian entities, leveraging Russia's natural gas and ammonia resources for production.
Scheduled for operation by mid-2028, this project reaffirms India's strategy to mitigate urea import reliance, following a similar pact with Oman. Currently, India imports significant quantities of urea, including from Russia.
