Iranian authorities have detained 18 crew members of a foreign tanker in the Gulf of Oman, accused of carrying 6 million litres of smuggled fuel. The crew, from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, are part of an ongoing investigation. Iran is combating widespread fuel smuggling due to low prices.
Iranian authorities detained 18 crew members after seizing a foreign tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, accusing it of carrying 6 million litres of smuggled fuel, according to Iranian media reports on Saturday.
Citing the Hormozgan province judiciary, reports indicated that those detained include the tanker's captain. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that the crew hailed from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Authorities allege the tanker violated multiple regulations, including ignoring stop orders, attempting to flee, and lacking proper navigation and cargo documentation.
The operation is part of Iran's continued battle against rampant fuel smuggling, exacerbated by the country's heavily subsidized fuel prices and depreciated currency. This has led to increased smuggling activities to neighboring and Gulf Arab countries by both land and sea.
