India is on the brink of launching commercial semiconductor chip production, with the milestone expected within weeks, according to S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Krishnan revealed that private production is already underway at several plants, signaling a crucial step forward in India's semiconductor aspirations, which align with the government's self-reliance goals in technology.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in September at the Semicon India conference that test chips from Micron and Tata are in production. This development represents India's rapid progress in the sector. Additionally, India's high ranking in Stanford University's AI Vibrancy tool highlights its strengths in R&D and talent.

Looking ahead, the India AI Impact Summit is scheduled for February 2026, with preparations in full swing. MeitY Secretary Krishnan emphasized strong international interest and participation expected from over 100 countries, positioning India as a key player in the AI industry.

At the recent AI Leadership Meet, Krishnan highlighted international outreach efforts, with promotional activities in key global cities. The summit promises significant outcomes in AI, aiming to harness technology for people's welfare.
