The Indian steel tube and pipe industry is appealing to the government to maintain existing restrictions on Chinese firms' involvement in power sector projects and the importation of Chinese equipment. This plea highlights concerns over potential harms to the domestic industry.
The Seamless Tube Manufacturers' Association of India (STMAI) has alerted the steel ministry that easing such restrictions could undermine domestic manufacturing capabilities, lead to increased banking stresses, and cause significant unemployment.
According to STMAI, allowing Chinese suppliers to enter the market would result in underpriced competition, which could lead to underutilized domestic production capacities and the shutdown of advanced manufacturing facilities.
