Digital Reforms Boost MSME Productivity in India
A study by the IMF highlights how digitalisation in public administration has enhanced productivity in Indian MSMEs. The report notes that states adopting more digital reforms have seen significant growth in productivity of unincorporated manufacturing firms, specifically benefiting small and micro enterprises by reducing compliance costs and improving transparency.
According to a recent working paper by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), digitalisation reforms in India's public administration have significantly boosted productivity among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in states that have embraced these changes.
The report found that states implementing more digitalisation measures experienced higher productivity growth and decreased productivity dispersion among firms. This development is particularly crucial for unincorporated manufacturing firms, which form a substantial segment of India's economy.
The paper highlighted that the cost of dealing with bureaucratic hurdles is notably significant for small firms versus their larger counterparts. It points out that digital tools, like online tax filing and automated approvals, help reduce these costs and improve transparency, effectively leveling the playing field for all businesses. However, despite the benefits, microenterprises tend not to relocate to states with more reforms, suggesting limited direct spillover effects.
