BYD's Bold Ambition: Aiming for the Top
Wang Chuanfu, BYD's chairman, aims for the company to become the world's leading automaker within five years despite recent share price declines. BYD capitalizes on export growth and technological advances, but still faces domestic challenges and competition. To succeed, it must surpass giants such as Toyota.
Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, has expressed his ambitious vision for the company to become the planet's largest automaker within five years, even as the company faces a steep decline in its share prices. Currently ranked sixth globally, BYD sold 4.6 million vehicles in 2025 but has struggled due to intensified competition domestically.
At the company's annual shareholder meeting in Shenzhen, Wang emphasized the importance of accelerating production of the second-generation Blade Battery, the primary growth bottleneck. He highlighted BYD's strong exports and advanced technologies in batteries and fast-charging as drivers for future growth both at home and internationally.
BYD needs to overcome its domestic performance challenges and surpass Toyota Motor to achieve the No. 1 position. Although its exports have surged by 65% this year, the company must still contend with a more than 20% decline in overall deliveries domestically during the same period.
