Struggle for Stability: Chasing Government Jobs in Booming India

Sunil Kumar, a 30-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, has spent nearly a decade pursuing government jobs, appearing for 13 exams without success. Packed in makeshift classrooms, he continues to prepare in hopes of securing a stable position before he turns 32, the cut-off age for civil services exams.

Despite India's booming economy, millions like Kumar seek government jobs for their perceived security and lifelong benefits. Between 2014 and 2022, 220 million applied for federal jobs, but only 722,000 secured positions. Private sector jobs are seen as less stable, driving the demand for government employment.

The demand for government jobs underscores the uncertainties in India's job market. Analysts point to discontent over employment opportunities as a reason for Prime Minister Modi's party's recent electoral challenges. The government plans to boost job creation through tax incentives and local procurement, but these measures are slow to take effect.
