Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani has brought the plight of Asiatic lions to the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pressing for better facilities and infrastructure for tourism in Gujarat's Gir forest.
Nathwani, part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment, Forest and Climate Change, presented his book 'Call of the Gir' to Modi on July 31 in New Delhi. During their meeting, Nathwani highlighted the need for new lion sanctuaries like Barda and the expansion of Keshod airport.
'I met the PM to discuss Gir and lion conservation. New sanctuaries are crucial given the growing lion population, which has expanded beyond Gir into 14 districts,' Nathwani said, suggesting that increasing flight traffic at Keshod airport by extending the runway would boost tourism.
