India's inbound tourism continues to trail pre-pandemic levels as the first half of 2024 saw 4.78 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs), about 90% of the first half of 2019, according to a report by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics.
Foreign exchange earnings have risen, indicating higher per-tourist spending. However, India's recovery lags the global trend, with global FTAs at 96% of 2019 levels. Reduced demand from Bangladesh due to political unrest and the suspension of direct flights from China were significant factors affecting tourist footfalls.
Meanwhile, destinations like Qatar, Dubai, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka have exceeded their pre-pandemic FTAs. Emerging tourist spots such as Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan are also drawing visitors. Interestingly, India's outbound tourism is thriving, with a 12% increase in Indian departures over pre-Covid levels, driven by higher disposable incomes and shifting travel preferences.
