Choi Soon-hwa, an 81-year-old South Korean fashion model, recently competed in the Miss Universe Korea pageant, aiming to become the oldest Miss Universe contestant. Competing against rivals significantly younger, Choi captivated the audience in a beaded white gown and earned the 'best dresser' award.
Han Ariel, a 22-year-old fashion school student, emerged victorious and will represent South Korea in the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City this November. Choi, who began her modeling career in her 70s after retiring from her job as a hospital care worker, was one of 32 finalists announced earlier this month.
Choi's participation was emblematic of the changes in the pageant industry, as this year, Miss Universe lifted its controversial age limit of 28, reflecting efforts to modernize and diversify the competition. Korean pageant organizers also removed other restrictive requirements, such as those related to education, height, and language, making the contest more inclusive.
