A woman, reportedly suffering from mental illness, allegedly vandalized a Shivling at a temple in the Nagrota area of Himachal's Kangra district, according to police reports on Monday.
The woman, named Nishan Devi, was identified via CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. Superintendent of Police Kangra Shalini Agnihotri mentioned that Devi is from the Hindu community, had a history of mental health issues, and had previously damaged religious idols.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, generated protests with some Hindu groups alleging desecration by individuals from another community. They also demanded that Muslim vendors vacate their shops. Police informed that Devi would undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine her mental state, and further action would follow based on the medical report. A case has been registered under section 298 of the BNS for injuring or defiling a place of worship.
CCTV footage revealed Devi entering and exiting the temple premises early on Friday, confirming her involvement. This isn't an isolated incident as she has been involved in similar activities in the past.
