The age-old tradition of bullock cart racing at Punjab's Kila Raipur sports event may soon see a revival, as government officials deliberate on new rules to reinstate it. Named the 'Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 2024', these regulations would permit the races that were previously prohibited.
Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian informed the assembly that consultations are underway with the Advocate General, aiming to align these traditional sports with legal standards. This effort marks an integral part of honoring cultural legacies while complying with modern animal welfare laws.
Originally halted by a 2014 Supreme Court ruling citing violations of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the bullock cart races symbolize not only sportsmanship but a deep-rooted cultural practice in Punjab. The proposed amendments highlight the government's initiative to bring these customs back within a lawful framework.
