The Sistine Chapel's chimney emitted black smoke, a signal that the conclave's second and third ballots were unsuccessful in appointing a new pope.
Thursday's morning voting saw 133 cardinals failing to secure a two-thirds majority, necessary to succeed Pope Francis.
The cardinals are now sequestered at Vatican residences for lunch before returning to cast more votes in the afternoon.
