The management of the Murudeshwar Temple in Uttara Kannada district has instituted a dress code for devotees visiting the inner sanctum, disallowing western attire in designated sacred areas. The directive, issued on Monday, stipulates that men must don either a traditional dhoti or full-length formal trousers, while women are restricted to sarees or salwar kameez.
This prohibition of casual or western clothing in specific sections of the temple premises comes in response to pressure from Hindu organizations advocating for a return to traditional customs in religious spaces. A notice board has been installed at the temple entrance to maintain transparency and inform visitors about the newly imposed regulations.
Mudeshwar Temple, revered as a significant pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva, draws both devotees and tourists to Karnataka's coast each year, making these changes impactful on a large scale.
