Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh has announced the establishment of a new Weavers' Service Centre (WSC) in Meghalaya, contingent on the state government providing land. This facility, aimed at bolstering the region's textile capacities, will complement the existing WSC in Guwahati.

Singh made the announcement at the inauguration of the Integrated Textile & Tourism Centre (ITTC) in Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi district, and the launch of 'EKTA' Meghalaya, a platform for exhibiting and sharing textile expertise. The proposed centre will offer critical design, technical, and market support for regional weavers.

The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise weaving technologies, strengthening handloom clusters, and promoting natural fibres on a global scale. Muga sericulture expansion was also discussed, aiming to double farmers' incomes and boost India's global standing in silk production.
