Flower prices in Ahmedabad's Jamalpur market have surged dramatically at the beginning of Shravan month as worshippers head to temples to honor Lord Shiva. The wholesale price of roses, typically 40 to 50 rupees or up to 100 rupees on regular days, has surged to between 300 and 400 rupees per kilogram.
Similarly, marigold prices, usually 30 to 40 rupees per kilogram, have escalated to 100 to 120 rupees per kilogram during Shravan. The kesar marigold has been particularly affected, with prices increasing from 40 rupees to 150-200 rupees per kilogram. Garlands, used for both decoration and worship, now cost 250 to 300 rupees per kilogram, a significant rise from their usual price of 100 rupees.
Belpatra, essential for Shiva worship, has also seen its price rise to 50 rupees a pair. Despite the soaring costs, devotees like Jignesh Panchal are committed to continuing their worship rituals. Flower merchant Zakir Hussain Zheikh attributes the price hike to both increased demand during Shravan and the impact of rain on flower supplies from Indore, Ujjain, and Nashik. Consequently, prices have climbed by an estimated 30 to 70 percent.
