Energy Firms Propel FTSE Amid Key Inflation Insights
UK's main stock index rose, driven by energy companies amid crucial inflation data analysis and anticipation of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision. Though the FTSE 100 saw gains, telecom stocks suffered. The Bank of England's rate decision looms as traders predict potential future rate cuts.
Energy companies contributed to a rise in the UK's main stock index on Wednesday, as investors analyzed critical inflation data for insights into domestic policy direction. The focus also shifted to the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision, which is set to have a significant impact on market dynamics.
By 0900 GMT, the FTSE 100 index advanced by 0.3%, albeit near its one-month low reached earlier on Tuesday. The FTSE midcap 250, more domestically inclined, inched up by 0.1%. The energy sector emerged as a leading gainer with a rise of 0.7%, likely spurred by an increase in crude oil prices. In contrast, telecom stocks experienced a significant 1.2% decline.
With the Bank of England's rate decision imminent, recent data indicated an eight-month high inflation rate in the UK for November, though a steadier measure of underlying price growth offered some reprieve. This affected the sterling value, subsequently giving a lift to stocks. 'Given the robust rebound in wage growth reported earlier, there's hardly any probability of the BoE announcing a rate cut soon,' indicated Paul Dales, the chief UK economist at Capital Economics.
