In an unprecedented move, the Assam government has officially recognized the Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) run by Aaranyak and its Director, Udayan Borthakur, for their expertise in wildlife genetics and forensics. This recognition, pursuant to Section 329 (4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, is the first of its kind in the state's wildlife sector.

The order, issued by the Governor of Assam on August 4, 2025, heralds a new era in wildlife crime investigation and control through forensic evidence. The lab's designation as a scientific expert facility will assist law enforcement agencies in gathering DNA evidence, potentially increasing conviction rates for wildlife-related offences. Udayan Borthakur, WGL's founder, acknowledged the notification as both an honor and a significant responsibility for the laboratory.

Since its inception in 2008, WGL Aaranyak has been the only facility of its kind in Northeast India, providing crucial DNA forensics support for over 135 governmental wildlife crime investigations. The lab also boasts a robust portfolio of conservation genetic research projects, contributing to efforts both within India and internationally to conserve threatened species.
