India’s Solar Boom: Tapping into 3,343 GWp Solar Potential

India has identified a potential of 3,343 GWp for ground-mounted solar PV across 27,571 sq km of wasteland, as per a National Institute of Solar Energy report. This surpasses the previous estimate of 748.98 GWp from 2014, highlighting vast opportunities beyond desert regions, with Rajasthan leading the potential.

India could tap into an astounding 3,343 gigawatts (GWp) of ground-mounted solar PV from 27,571 square kilometers of its wasteland, announced the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) in a recent report.

The report, produced by NISE—an autonomous entity under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE)—presents a comprehensive analysis of India's solar potential, replacing the 2014 estimate of 748.98 GWp.

Western India, especially Rajasthan, spearheads the potential, while notable contributions are noted from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, emphasizing the nation's rich solar capabilities beyond traditional desert regions.
