Italy's government is seeking parliamentary approval for a significant 2.4-billion-euro investment dedicated to the modernization and maintenance of its frigate fleet over the next 15 years. As Italy endeavors to boost its defense budget, this move aligns with NATO's target of increasing spending to 5% of GDP.
The program, spanning until 2039, focuses on maintaining operational conditions and logistic support for the FREMM-type frigate naval units. These multipurpose warships, developed jointly by Italy's Fincantieri and France's Naval Group, ensure Italy's capability to monitor critical maritime areas effectively.
Despite criticism from opposition parties over the heavy defense expenditure, which exceeds 3 billion euros, the Italian government maintains its stance on strengthening defense capabilities. The new defense strategy, funded by both national industry and defense ministries, awaits approval from parliament's defense committees. This program is deemed essential for national security while raising concerns about the government's commitment to social services.
