In a concerted effort to address the issue of illegal immigration, the Uttar Pradesh Police have launched 'Operation Torch' in Varanasi, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The operation involves the verification of identities of individuals living in Varanasi who are not native to the region, checking for valid documentation and background information.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nitin Taneja emphasized that the initiative seeks to uncover residents without proper verification. 'We aim to identify people who might have arrived from Bangladesh or other regions without appropriate credentials,' ACP Taneja stated, adding that the operation underscores routine security protocols.

The drive forms part of ongoing security strategies and follows commendations from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He lauded the valor of the Provincial Armed Constabulary on its foundation day, recalling its crucial role during the 2001 Parliament terror attack and its long-standing contributions to maintaining law and order.
