A recent study challenges conventional wisdom about India's cattle sector, revealing that more than a third of cattle rearers prioritize non-market uses over milk production. The Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) conducted a survey showing that 38% of rearers focus on household nutrition, dung, and draught power.

The study covered 7,350 households across 15 states, demonstrating a significant variation in motivations for cattle rearing. While states like Jharkhand see 71% of rearers prioritizing non-milk uses, the overall landscape indicates a need for policy adjustments that account for these diverse priorities.

Challenges persist, including inadequate veterinary services and a lack of awareness of government interventions. The CEEW recommends localized policy interventions and climate resilience integration to support cattle rearers, underscoring the sector's multifaceted role in India's economy and rural livelihoods.
