Malaysia Shifts to Remote Work to Combat Fuel Costs

The Malaysian government has announced a new policy allowing government workers to work from home starting this month, as part of efforts to cut energy costs. This decision, prompted by the escalating fuel prices due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, was revealed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The policy, effective April 15, will apply to staff at ministries, government agencies, and state-linked companies. Anwar emphasized that the main goal is to decrease fuel usage and maintain a sustainable energy supply, with further specifics on the implementation of this policy pending announcement. Meanwhile, steps are being taken by the state oil firm Petronas to secure necessary resources.

In a bid to manage the situation, Malaysia will intensify its crackdown on misinformation pertaining to the energy crisis. Currently, the nation is spending close to $1 billion monthly on subsidies to keep retail fuel prices affordable. While unsubsidized diesel prices continue to climb, some fuels like RON97 petrol have seen minor price reductions.
