Soaring Temperatures, Soaring Demand: India's Power Struggle
India witnessed a moderate decrease in peak power demand to 238.15 GW on Sunday from a record 256 GW on Saturday, due to industrial closures. Experts predict a continued rise in demand this summer owing to heat waves. The demand is nearing the Power Ministry's estimated 270 GW for the season.
India's electricity demand has witnessed fluctuations as recent data from the Power Ministry reveals. Yesterday, the peak power demand dropped to 238.15 GW, a reprieve from the unprecedented 256 GW recorded the day before.
The decrease is attributed largely to the closure of commercial and industrial establishments, significantly lowering demand. Analysts predict that power consumption is likely to shoot up again, driven by rising temperatures and increased usage of cooling devices like air conditioners.
In anticipation, experts express concerns that peak power demand will push the limits of the Power Ministry's projected 270 GW, especially during the intensely hot months of May and June. The surge underscores the growing energy needs of a rapidly warming climate.
