QatarEnergy's LNG Supply Cut Fuels Energy Uncertainty in Europe
QatarEnergy has extended force majeure, cancelling five additional LNG cargoes to Edison, impacting Italy's supply. Amidst Iran-related disruptions, 17 shipments have been affected with Edison replacing volume mostly via U.S. LNG. Despite challenges, no impact on end customers is expected.
QatarEnergy has informed its key European client, Edison, of the cancellation of five more LNG shipments, prolonging the force majeure from early July to mid-August. The situation has arisen due to complications related to the Iran war, affecting Italy's gas supply contract with QatarEnergy, which involves 6.4 billion cubic meters of LNG annually.
The cumulative number of impacted LNG deliveries destined for the Adriatic terminal now stands at 17, totaling an estimated 2.2 billion cubic meters of gas. Edison, a subsidiary of the French energy giant EDF, has been actively securing alternative supplies, predominantly from the United States, to cushion the effects of these disruptions.
By March 25, Edison successfully replaced nine out of the 17 cancelled shipments -- about 1 billion cubic meters of gas. However, the initial quarter witnessed a halving of operating profit primarily due to the ongoing force majeure. Despite these setbacks, representatives confirm there will be no impact on Italian end consumers.
