In a significant political development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin has officially accepted the resignation of K. Annamalai, former Tamil Nadu state chief, from the party's primary membership. The decision follows Annamalai's recent meeting in New Delhi with prominent BJP figures, including General Secretary BL Santhosh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Annamalai, an ex-IPS officer turned politician, announced plans to engage with the public through social media interactions, hinting at potential future political endeavors. This move comes amidst speculation about Annamalai forming a new political party following BJP's dismal performance in Tamil Nadu's assembly elections, where the party secured only 3 per cent of the vote share in 2021.
Despite his achievements in boosting BJP's vote share to 11 per cent during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party failed to win any parliamentary seats, leading to his replacement as state chief. Annamalai's resignation has sparked curiosity about his next steps in the political arena, with supporters urging him to take on a leadership role.
