Shigellosis Outbreak Raises Health Concerns in Kerala

Two young students in Kerala's Wayanad district have contracted Shigellosis, prompting health officials to monitor over 300 potential cases. Authorities ensure food safety measures are in place to curb the bacterial infection's spread, which claimed the life of a child in Kozhikode recently.

In a concerning development, two students from Kerala's Wayanad district have been diagnosed with Shigellosis, a highly infectious bacterial intestinal disease caused by the Shigella genus, according to health officials. The affected individuals include a four-and-a-half-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl.

Health authorities report that 339 people have exhibited symptoms of the infection. Among them, 21 are receiving care at the Sultan Bathery Taluk Headquarters Hospital, and 38 are being treated at private facilities. So far, 21 samples were sent for analysis, with two confirming positive for the bacteria, while the remaining results are pending.

In a related incident, a four-year-old girl succumbed to the infection at Kozhikode Medical College. Two other cases, involving a two-year-old and a ten-year-old, have recovered successfully. As a preventive measure, Keralam Health Minister K Muraleedharan announced intensified inspections of food and water quality, with a strict directive for hygienic practices.
