Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Falta, was brought before the Diamond Harbour Subdivision Court following his arrest by the West Bengal Special Task Force, assisted by the Darjeeling Police. The arrest took place at Panitanki Bazar under Kharibari Police Station on Monday afternoon, leading to heavy security at the court to prevent unrest.
The arrest of Khan, already sought by authorities for multiple cases at Falta Police Station, occurred near the Nepal border, increasing geopolitical attention. Khan recently made headlines after withdrawing from the West Bengal Assembly elections before repolling, prompting the TMC to call his actions a betrayal and drawing sarcastic remarks from BJP leaders.
The political scene was further charged as BJP secured a landslide victory with Debangshu Panda defeating the CPI (M) candidate. Meanwhile, criticism emerged over the arrest's timing, with leaders like CPI (M)'s Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya questioning government delays in arresting Khan. West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul emphasized accountability, stating no one would be spared for harming citizens.
