In a crucial legal battle, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan's plea challenging the rejection of her Rajya Sabha nomination papers. The case was expedited after Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi addressed the urgency before a bench of Justices PK Mishra and Atul S. Chandurkar, requesting either an early hearing or an interim order.
The plea arises from the Returning Officer's decision to dismiss Natarajan's nomination due to an alleged non-disclosure of a pending criminal case. Singhvi contends that only a summons had been issued without the case reaching the cognisance stage. This move is viewed as biased and illegal, compelling the Supreme Court to list the matter for urgent hearing.
The Congress party has expressed outrage, alleging a 'political conspiracy' aimed at securing all Rajya Sabha seats for the BJP. Meanwhile, the BJP criticizes the non-disclosure of key information by Natarajan, adding complexity to the case which hinges on interpretations of the Representation of the People Act. A Congress delegation has already approached the Election Commission regarding the nomination's rejection.
