Supreme Court Recognizes Homemakers as 'Nation Builders', Sets New Compensation Norm

The Supreme Court on Thursday recognized homemakers as "nation builders," emphasizing the economic value of unpaid domestic work. It established a notional monthly income of Rs 30,000 to assess the loss of domestic-care services as a separate compensation head, challenging traditional gender stereotypes and recognizing homemakers' profound societal impact.

The Supreme Court has taken a landmark step by officially acknowledging homemakers as "nation builders," a decision expected to dramatically affect compensation claims involving loss of domestic services. At the heart of the ruling is the establishment of a notional monthly income of Rs 30,000, aimed at adequately evaluating the invaluable contributions of homemakers.

The verdict emerged from a case filed by the family of a woman killed in a motor vehicle accident. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and N. Kotiswar Singh underscored the indispensable yet unpaid role homemakers play in supporting households and, by extension, the nation. By designating homemakers as "nation builders," the Court seeks to redefine the societal perception of domestic work in economic terms.

This groundbreaking judgment also addressed the broader systemic negligence of domestic labor in economic assessments. The Court highlighted how crucial unpaid caregiving is by drawing on international studies and India's Time Use Survey, which state that women's unpaid domestic work contributes significantly to India's GDP. Furthermore, the ruling called into question the traditional metrics, such as GDP, arguing they fail to account for the immense value homemakers contribute to society.
