Amid recent reports of Zika virus cases emerging from various parts of Maharashtra, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday issued a crucial advisory to all states. The advisory underscores the necessity of stringent surveillance over the country's Zika virus situation.
States are advised to prioritize screening for pregnant women and monitor fetal growth in those who test positive for the virus. The Directorate General of Health Services, represented by Dr. Atul Goel, has urged health facilities to appoint a nodal officer specifically to manage mosquito control efforts and ensure premises are free of Aedes mosquito infestation.
The Zika virus, similar to dengue and chikungunya, is primarily spread through Aedes mosquitoes. Though generally non-fatal, it is linked to serious conditions like microcephaly in newborns. The advisory calls for heightened vigilance and immediate reporting of new cases to maintain public health safety.
