Karnataka's Battle Against Bird Flu: Minister Enforces Stringent Measures

Following the death of 44 peacocks due to the H5N1 virus in Tumakuru, Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered strict measures to prevent its spread in forest areas. Affected zones have been established, and the public is urged to report any unusual bird deaths. Surveillance will cover 38 villages.

Karnataka's Tumakuru district faces a significant health challenge following the death of 44 peacocks due to the H5N1 avian influenza virus. In response, State Minister Eshwar Khandre has directed officials to implement stringent precautionary measures across forest areas, including zoos and bird sanctuaries, to prevent further spread.

The directive came after findings from the ICAR–National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases confirmed the virus's presence. Minister Khandre highlighted the importance of reporting any bird deaths promptly and of conducting immediate tests on carcass samples to curb the outbreak.

Authorities have demarcated specific infected and surveillance zones to control the situation. The public is advised on preventive measures including avoiding contact with sick or deceased birds, using PPE when handling birds, and ensuring poultry is cooked thoroughly. Vigilance remains crucial as the state monitors the situation closely.
