The Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached a new health zone in the northeastern province of Ituri, according to information released by authorities on Wednesday. This expansion highlights ongoing transmission more than three weeks after the epidemic's declaration.

Tchomia, located about 50 kilometers south of Bunia, has been identified as the most recent area affected, raising the count to a total of 26 impacted health zones nationwide, with 18 in Ituri, which itself accounts for over 94% of the confirmed cases. In Congo, a health zone encompasses a specific region serviced by a network of clinics and a referral hospital.

The government's latest situation report noted 37 new confirmed cases, including 12 fatalities, within the last 24 hours, all centered in Ituri. To date, the epidemic, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain that lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment, has resulted in 635 confirmed cases and 127 deaths across three eastern provinces. With eight newly recovered patients, the total number of recoveries stands at 30, while treatment measures have been initiated at Ebola centers in Bunia and Rwampara.
