Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio) officially accepted the nomination as Donald Trump's vice-presidential running mate during a keynote speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. 'Tonight, Mr. Chairman, I stand here humbly, and I'm overwhelmed with gratitude to say I officially accept your nomination to be Vice President of the United States of America,' Vance announced.
In his speech, Vance praised Trump, referring to him as 'tough' and emphasizing his compassion for people. He also echoed Trump's call for unity and urged fellow Republicans, 'We love this country and we are united to win.'
Reflecting on recent events, Vance highlighted Trump's resilience following an assassination attempt, recalling a moment when a bullet grazed Trump's ear during a rally in Pennsylvania. 'Look at that photo of him, defiant, fist in the air. When Donald Trump rose to his feet in that Pennsylvania field, all of America stood with him. And what did he call us to do for our country? To fight. To fight for America,' Vance recounted, lauding Trump's unwavering commitment to the nation.
Vance continued to praise Trump's leadership, emphasizing how the former president's response to the assassination attempt demonstrated his dedication. 'Even in his most perilous moment, we were on his mind. His instinct was for us ... to call us to something higher,' Vance added, acknowledging the significant adversity Trump has faced over the past eight years.
Outlining the future of Trump's political movement, Vance stressed that Trump envisions a leadership role for him in the party, beyond his presidency. He also criticized President Joe Biden's political record, highlighting policies that Vance claims have been detrimental to American communities.
Vance's wife, Usha, contributed to the narrative by reflecting on their personal backgrounds and shared journey, underscoring the opportunities in America. 'That JD and I could meet at all, let alone fall in love and marry, is a testament to this great country,' she said.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden cut short a campaign trip after testing positive for COVID-19, with the White House reporting his mild symptoms. This development comes amid internal Democratic Party calls for Biden to reconsider his candidacy under significant political pressure.
