United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has emphasized the critical importance of a peaceful and transparent transition of power in Bangladesh. He stated that this transition must be open to the meaningful participation of all citizens and guided by the country's human rights obligations. Those responsible for killings and injuries should be held accountable.
Turk remarked, "The transition must be conducted in a transparent and accountable way, inclusive and open to all Bangladeshis." He added that further violence and reprisals must be avoided, urging for the democratic order and rule of law to be restored promptly. Turk called for the release of arbitrarily detained individuals and accountability for human rights violations.
His statement comes as Bangladesh faces a volatile political situation following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation amid protests. Initially sparked by students against a government job quota system, the demonstrations escalated into anti-government protests. Sheikh Hasina has since traveled to India, with her future location unclear.
Turk reiterated demands for a thorough, impartial investigation into alleged human rights abuses since July, citing the initial peaceful protests turning violent. He expressed readiness to support such an investigation to ensure public confidence.
At this pivotal moment, Turk stressed the need for justice and reform, highlighting Bangladesh's human rights obligations as a roadmap for transitional authorities. He called for national healing through an end to violence and accountability measures ensuring victims' rights to truth and reparations.
Following Hasina's resignation, anti-discrimination student leaders proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. This was announced in a video message by key student leaders amidst ongoing violence. President Mohammed Shahabuddin approved the formation of an interim government, with military and civil society leaders convening to address the crisis.
The Army has been tasked with restoring law and order. Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the imminent return of party acting chairman Tarique Rahman. (ANI)
