A violent riot at Tuxpan prison in Veracruz, Mexico, resulted in the deaths of seven inmates and left eleven injured, as reported by Khaama Press on Tuesday. The deadly conflict involved prisoners and the notorious criminal gang, Grupo Sombra.
The Veracruz State Public Security Department disclosed that the violence erupted over the gang's alleged extortion and threats against other inmates and their families. Videos on social media indicate that the riot may have been a protest against these intimidations.
Security forces managed to regain control on Sunday, extinguishing fires lit during the tumult. Smoke was seen rising from the facility, while injured inmates were moved to external medical centers for treatment. This incident reflects ongoing challenges within Mexican prisons, exacerbated by overcrowding and gang rivalries.
Mexican prisons, particularly state facilities, frequently experience violence due to rival drug cartels and gangs. Such incidents often mirror external turf wars. In a notable 2023 riot in Ciudad Juarez, 25 inmates escaped, and several fatalities occurred.
Human rights organizations urge comprehensive investigations and reforms to avert future tragedies. Experts caution that without significant changes, these institutions will remain battlegrounds for criminal activities, threatening inmates and public safety, according to Khaama Press. (ANI)
