As tensions simmer in West Asia, Pakistan's economic challenges mount, with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb indicating a potential surge in the nation's monthly oil import bill to USD 600 million, according to Dawn on Sunday.

During a briefing attended by the country's Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Aurangzeb highlighted the financial strains due to rising oil prices, exacerbated by the regional conflict. The government is formulating strategies to mitigate the impact, while crude oil prices threaten USD 120 per barrel.

Minister Malik, addressing the situation, advocated for fuel-saving measures and announced upcoming LNG supply disruptions. Diplomatic talks are ongoing with Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to identify alternative fuel supply routes beyond the Strait of Hormuz. This unfolds amid Pakistan's drastic fuel price hikes, which have incited public concern and threaten to further stoke inflation.

On March 7, 2026, petrol prices soared to PKR 321.17 per litre, and high-speed diesel to PKR 335.86, sparking public outcry amid an already challenging economic landscape. Experts foresee a second inflation wave as increased fuel costs reverberate through transport, logistics, and essential goods sectors, illustrating the crisis's expansive financial burden.

Amid the hardship, Islamabad faces limited options, with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasizing the necessity of passing on global oil price spikes to local consumers to stabilize energy finances as per IMF consultation requirements.
