India Steps Up Efforts to Repatriate Nationals Stuck in Myanmar Cyber Scam Compounds
Over the past 18 months, India has successfully repatriated 2,411 nationals stuck in Myanmar's cyber scam compounds, with efforts continuing to rescue over 150 still trapped. The Ministry of External Affairs has highlighted the need for increased regional cooperation as many are trafficked via third countries.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Monday that India has successfully repatriated 2,411 citizens trapped in cyber scam operations in Myanmar over the last 18 months, though over 150 remain stranded. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized ongoing cooperation with Myanmar to address the issue.
Misri revealed that the remaining stranded citizens include those trafficked to these scam compounds, often through third countries. Highlighting the necessity for enhanced regional collaboration, he stressed that the problem extends beyond bilateral relations, given its complex security implications.
The announcement followed bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar's President U Min Aung Hlaing, where the situation was a significant agenda. Notably, the Myawaddy region in Myanmar is identified as a hub for online fraud, allegedly backed by Chinese syndicates and local armed groups connected to Myanmar’s military.
