Federal law enforcement authorities are investigating Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who attempted to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Secret Service identified and shot Crooks seconds after he allegedly fired shots towards the stage.
One rally attendee, a 50-year-old man named Corey Comperatore, was killed, and two other spectators were critically injured. Trump sustained a gunshot wound to his right ear. Crooks, a resident of Bethel Park, was a registered Republican eligible to vote in the upcoming election where Trump challenges President Joe Biden.
Federal Election Commission records show Crooks made a $15 donation to ActBlue, which was earmarked for the Progressive Turnout Project. His parents, unable to be reached for comment, have differing political affiliations. The firearm Crooks used was legally purchased by his father, and bomb-making materials were found in his car.
